The Google Travel and Conference Grants is now open for applications. To help break down the barriers that prevent underrepresented groups in computer science from attending leading tech conferences, they’re excited to offer Google Travel and Conference Grants for selected conferences in Computer Science and related fields.

Google believes a diversity of attributes, experiences, and perspectives are needed to build tools that can change the world. Everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue a career in computer science and technology, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability or military service.

Grants are available in North America for all traditionally underrepresented groups in technology (including, but not limited to, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, persons with disabilities, women and veterans), in Europe for women in technology, in India and in Africa for students who have their research papers accepted at top-tier conferences in Computer Science and related areas.

To encourage attendance at technical conferences, Google will provide selected recipients:
  • Free conference registration
  • North America: A $500 reimbursement to retroactively be used toward airfare and accommodation costs (will be awarded after the conference)
  • Europe: Up to 1000 EUR towards travel and accommodation costs (will be paid after the conference)
  • India: An award in the range of $1000 – $3,000 that will cover conference registration, travel, accommodation and other related expenses.
  • Africa: An award in the range of $1000 to $3000 that will cover conference registration, travel, accommodation and related expenses. Grant amount depends on cost for the international conference.​
  • Japan & South Korea: Up to $3000 towards air tickets and lodging cost (will be paid after the conference). Grant amount depends on cost for the international conference.​
Eligibility
Grant eligibility varies by region, so please review the information on the region-specific pages on the left. Grants will be awarded to the most qualified persons based on application review. Every applicant will be notified of their status according to the time frames specified for the region.

For North America
To be eligible for a grant to attend a conference in North America, applicants must:
  • Be a resident of North America
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Work or study in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a technical field related to the conference subject
  • Have a strong academic and/or professional background with demonstrated leadership ability
  • Be able to attend the core day(s) of one of the conferences listed below:
    • Def Con Conference (Deadline: May 25, 2018)
    • International Design Conference (Deadline: July 1, 2018)
    • ICMCP (International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals) (Deadline: July 6, 2018)
    • ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference (Deadline: July 13, 2018)
    • Society of Women Engineers: Women in Engineering (WE) Conference (Deadline: August 10, 2018)
    • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) National Convention (Deadline: August 31, 2018)
    • Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS)
Europe
To be eligible for a grant to attend a conference in Europe, applicants must:
  • Be a woman working or studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a technical field related to the conference subject (no residency restrictions apply)
  • Have a strong academic and/or professional background with demonstrated leadership ability
  • Be able to attend the core day(s) of one of the conferences listed below:
    • Women of Silicon Roundabout 2018 (Deadline: April 27th 2018)
    • International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) (Deadline: May 1, 2018)
    • International Conference of Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining (KDD) (Deadline: June 8, 2018)
    • European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) (Deadline: June 29, 2018)
    • SREcon 2018 (Deadline: July 1st 2018)
    • European Women in Tech 2018
India

To be eligible for a grant to attend a conference in India, applicants must:
  • Be a student enrolled with a recognized university in India who is in need of conference travel funds.
  • Have a paper accepted at a top-tier top-tier Computer Science conference. They prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit research.google.com for a list of areas. The paper must be accepted for full publication and preferably full oral presentation. As an indicator, they have recently approved travel grants for CVPR, NIPS, CHI, STOC, PLDI, COLT, ICML, CIKM, KDD, ICCV, EMNLP, ACL, Interspeech and FSE.
  • Be the primary author of the accepted paper.
  • Have a paper accepted for oral presentation in the main conference program. Some conferences may have different presentation guidelines in which case the equivalent of a conventional full oral presentation must be considered. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel grants.
Africa
To be eligible for a grant to attend an international conference, applicants must:
  • Be a student enrolled with a recognized university in Africa who is in need of conference travel funds.
  • Studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a technical field related to the conference subject.
  • Have a paper accepted for presentation (oral or poster) in the main conference program at a top-tier Computer Science conference. They prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit research.google.com for a list of areas. The paper must be accepted for full publication and preferably full oral presentation. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel grants.
  • Be the sole or joint first author of the accepted paper.
Japan and South Korea
To be eligible for a grant to attend an international research conference, applicants must:
  • Be a full-time student enrolled with a recognized university in Japan or South Korea who is in need of conference travel funds.
  • Have a paper accepted at a top-tier Computer Science conference. They prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit research.google.com for a list of areas. Please refer to popular conference rankings to determine the conference tier.
  • Be the primary author of the accepted paper.
  • Have a paper accepted for oral presentation in the main conference program. Some conferences may have different presentation guidelines in which case the equivalent of a conventional full oral presentation must be considered. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel grants.

Applications are open for the first CHCI Africa Workshop, Addis 2019, to be held at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia). Hosted by the Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centers (CHCI) in collaboration with the College of Performing and Visual Art and the Center of African Studies at Addis Ababa University, the two-week workshop will include intensive seminars, mentoring and training workshops, and guest lectures.

The Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) is an international membership organization that supports innovative programs in the humanities. They invite humanities graduate students studying in African universities and those who have received their PhDs since 2010 and are based in Africa, to apply to participate.

About the Workshop

The Addis 2019 workshop will include three intensive seminars focused on re-conceptualizing Africa as both a theoretical category and a prism to examine the contemporary world. Through art, literature, performance, and philosophy, the seminars will build on the possibility of Africa that flourished across the continent and into the diaspora during the early years of decolonization.

During the course of the workshop, participants will critically engage the category of Africa itself, looking beyond both the post-Cold War focus on Africa as a metaphor for regression, decay, and urgent intervention and the limited opposition between ‘crisis’ and ‘renaissance.’ The new public debates on freedom and emancipation in the continent cut across differences framed in terms of ethnic or national affiliation, language, region, religion, or historical background. 

Addis 2019 will focus on redefining and multiplying the images of Africa and Africans past and present. Through intensive seminars and related activities, which will include lectures, panels, artists talks, and site visits, participants will explore a range of critical positions and cultural practices.


The mentorship and training of new cohorts of graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences will form a core element of Addis 2019. In addition to the mentorship and training that will be a key aspect of the thematic seminars, practical sessions, offered throughout the two-week workshop, will focus on publication and article development; grant and proposal writing; pedagogy and syllabus development; and collaborative research.
Benefits
  • Participants from outside of Addis will receive housing and most meals during the course of the workshop, as well as reading packets and air transportation to/from Addis.
Eligibility
  • Open to humanities graduate students studying in African universities and those who have received their PhDs since 2010 and are based in Africa
  • Applicants should be doctoral students at the dissertation-writing stage or early-career academics and scholars at African universities.
  • Interested applicants who do not fit these criteria but are based in Africa should contact Guillaume Ratel (email below).
Application
They seek applications for participation in the full two-week program. They expect to select 15 participants from African universities (outside of Addis) and up to 20 local participants.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has disclosed that it would demand for the records of Ordinary and Advanced Level results of candidates recommended by tertiary institutions before offering them admission.

This was disclosed by the JAMB boss, Ishaq Oloyede during the meeting on admissions exercise/processes for Innovative Enterprise Institutions in Abuja on Tuesday.

The registrar said that institutions must maintain the standard set by the board beginning from this year’s admission.

”From this year now, we are demanding records of the O levels of the candidates you are admitting and that is for the first time,” Mr. Oloyede said.

“When you recommend a person for admission we want to see what qualification he or she possesses not just you telling me that he or she scored 300 in UTME. What of the real qualification?” he said.

He said the board would stop the ”regularisation of all forms of illegal admissions conducted by tertiary institutions from this year.”

“Any admission ‘done under the table’ would not be regularized. Candidates and tertiary institutions must desist from engaging in any form of illegal admission. Illegal admission in terms of people not even taking the unified tertiary matriculation examination, UTME at all not to talk of scoring zero. 

Illegal admission by even admitting people who do not have the requisite ordinary level (O level) because before now JAMB does not have the record of their O level (results).” He emphasized.
